I hope to reach cytogeneticist Antonio Lima-de-Faria by phone in Sweden today, July 4, to wish him Happy Birthday! I know of no other scientist researching and writing at 102!

Antonio is one of science’s treasures, aptly decorated “Knight of the North Star” by the king of Sweden many years ago. He has been affiliated with Lund University for much of his scientific career, but his extraordinary insights in books and papers have been widely translated and continue to inspire. Antonio is truly a brilliant light in the night sky.
To celebrate Antonio’s 100th birthday, a concert was performed in his honor at his home town of Cantanhede, Portugal. A party followed with family and friends in the rose garden at his present home atop a fjord in Sweden.
Wishing you an even more marvelous 102nd birthday, Antonio Jose Cortesao Pais Lima-de-Faria!
[Note: I have just reached Antonio Lima-de-Faria, who was his usual ebullient self. He said his phone has been ringing non-stop with birthday wishes and that Portuguese university students called to sing to him earlier today. His secret to long life has always been his work. He told me he is amused that his July 4, 1921 birth date now confuses computers.]
